Treatment Method before Psychiatric Treatment in Psychiatric Out-Patients

Abstract
In order to evaluate the "Treatment Methods before Psychiatric Treatment" and "Consultation of Modern Psychiatric Treatment" in psychiatric out patients, author selected 108 subjects randomly who were treated at out-patient clinic of psychiatric department in Chonnam National University Hospital from Apr. 1, 1980 to Nov. 30, 1980.
The subjects were 108 in total; 55 males and 53 females, the age ranged from 10 to 65 years old.
The treatment Method: were divided into 6 groups;
"Shamanistic-Practices." "Herb Medicine," "Home Remedy."
"Drug Store", Other Hospital Treatment beside Psychiatry" and "Psychiatric¢¥ Treatment."
The "Consultation of Psychiatric Treatment" were divided into 3 groups: "Doctor¢¥s Advice," "Relative¢¥s Advice." "His Own Decision."
These data¡¯s were studies considering age and educational level. Because of biased distribution of the samples in age and education, the data-processing was- dully controlled.
1) Treatment method before psychiatric treatment in psychiatric outpatients as following order "Other hospital treatment beside psychiatry(50.%)", "Treatment by herbic medicine(45% )," "Treatment in drug store(32 % )," "Psychiatric treatment(26%)," "Treatment by shamanistic practices( 12%)," and "Treatment by home remedy(8%)."
2) The older the patients are, and the lower the patients educational level is-, the more frequently "Other treatment methods beside modern psychiatric treatment" had been received(p<0.01).
3) Forty six percentage of subjects visited psychiatric out-patient clinic by their own decisions, whereas 35% of the subjects visited the clinic according to relatives advice and 19% of the subjects according to doctor¢¥s advice.
4) The older patients(50 %) and the lower educational patients chose the modern psychiatric treatment by passive manner, for example, by the relative¢¥s advice.
5) Consequently, cultural influence on "Choice of Treatment Method in psychiatric out-patient" could be tentatively hypothesized, like the following statement. The much the influence of the traditional culture is the more frequently the patient chose other treatment method beside modern psychiatric treatment.
6) Considering the results in view of community psychiatry, active choice of modern psychiatric treatment in the groups of low aged and higher educational level would show us the possibility of secondary prevention of mental illness due to education.
